Virginia's Gillen wins crown at
Mat Town Open
LOCK HAVEN, Pa., Nov. 22 -- Shelton senior Patrick Gillen was one of two Virginia wrestlers to win championships at the Mat Town Open Sunday hosted by Lock Haven University. Gillen won at the heavyweight division.

"Today was another positive step forward in the overall development of our team," said Virginia head coach Steve Garland. "We had a lot of guys competing and getting better today. For me, as a coach, there is no greater joy than seeing your guys in this mode. I'm happy for (Joe) Martinez and (Pat) Gillen getting the feel of a tournament championship again.”

At heavyweight, it was an all Cavalier final as Gillen picked up a 5-3 decision against teammate Ethan Hayes to give Virginia the champion and second-place finisher in the weight class.

Senior Dominick Malone (133) took fifth at 141 at the Michigan State Open Sunday in East Lansing. Malone (Granby) . Malone also earned a first-round fall, beating Eastern Michigan's Ben Calandrino in 1:44. After a second round loss, Malone rebounded to win the next three, two by fall and one by tech fall, on his way to a fifth-place finish. This is Northwestern’s 100th season of competition. Malone was 22-19 a year ago and wrestled in the NCAA Division I tournament.

Coast Guard sophomore Chris Sullivan (157)  finished third at the Doug Parker Invitational in Springfield on Sunday, helping his team take eighth. Sullivan was 5-1 on the day with a pair of tech fall wins to start the tournament and then an 11-0 major decision to earn a spot in the semifinals. He lost 6-2 in the semifinals before winning 5-3 to earn a spot in the consolation final. He beat C.J. Luth (Milford, CT) from Southern Maine 2-1 to place third.

Senior Marc Wagner (184) was fourth, going 3-2 on the day while sophomore Dominick Summer was fifth at 133, going 3-2 on the day. Junior Dan Fiovanti was sixth at 174 winning four bouts.

Trinity College’s Matt Ferraro (heavyweight) won three of five bouts with one pin to finish fourth at the Doug Parker Invitational in Springfield. The Bantams finished 13th in the field of 18 teams. Ferraro pinned Springfield's Christian Lighten in 2:40 in one his three wins in a row in the heavyweight consolation bracket before falling, 16-0, against Southern Maine's Mike Risti in the third-place match.

Glastonbury’s Tyler Keane, the top seeded wrester at 133 pounds in Sunday’s Doug Parker Invitational at Springfield College, was one of three Springfield wrestlers to win his respective weight class and helped helped Springfield finish third. Stevens Institute of Technology won the tournament of 162 points, followed by Williams with 139. Host Springfield earned 127 points. Springfield’s Zach Joseph (149) was named the tournament’s outstanding wrestler.

“We have a very talented team and we were capable of winning the tournament today,” Williams coach Scott Honecker said. “The disappointment of finishing second should leave us hungry for the long season ahead. Our upperclassman really led the way today, and we saw dominant performances out of our three champions.” Williams was second with 139 points behind champion Stevens Institute of Technology with 162 points.

Milford junior C.J. Luth wrestled well to help Southern Maine take 10th at the Doug Parker Invitational. Competing at 157 pounds, Luth rumbled his way into the semifinals with three overpowering wins.  Luth earned back-to-back wins by technical fall defeating RIC's Aramand Vaziri 18-0 and then downing Coast Guard's Nicholas Jabs 16-0.  In the quarterfinals, Luth defeated Stevens Institute's Leo Wortman by decision 6-5 before falling to SIT's Thomas Poklikuha by decision, 7-2, in the semifinals.  In the third place match, Luth narrowly fell 2-1 with Coast Guard's Christopher Sullivan.
