Hornets win John Williams Duals
In Rockville, East Hartford won the 17th annual John Williams Duals at Rockville High by going undefeated in a snow-shortened tournament. Only five of the eight teams were able to attend and the Hornets beat all four of their opponents including a 63-11 win over Avon, which finished second with a 3-1 record. It is the first tournament title for the Hornets since 2005 when they won the Greater Hartford Invitational. ... Newtown had five individual champions and eight wrestlers in the top four of their respective weight classes as they finished second at the Timberlane Invitational. Host Timberlane won with 241 points with Newtown second with 173.

Friday, January 22
Ledyard hands No. 9 Ellis Tech first loss
Ledyard won seven of the first eight matches to build a lead and hand No. 9 Ellis Tech its first loss of the season Friday night in Danielson. The Colonels (17-2) led 32-3 after eight matches before Ellis Tech made the score closer in the final six matches. Ledyard also beat E.O. Smith, 61-12. … Bristol Central’s Chris Trelli won twice to improve to 12-3 on the season as the Rams beat Manchester, 66-12 and lost to No. 3 Fairfield Warde, 38-24. … Sophomore Ryan Luth (138) and junior Gina Esposito (113) each had three wins as No. 10 Foran (22-3) earned wins over Coventry, RI, Westerly RI and Waterford Friday night. Luth is now 27-1 on the year and Esposito is 26-2. ... On Thursday night, No. 6 Middletown remained undefeated with a 17-0 record after a dominating 51-12 victory over Platt High. … The snow coming this weekend has wiped out Saturday’s wrestling across Connecticut including the 34th annual New Milford Invitational, the Cougar Invitational at Haddam-Killingworth, the Husky Invitational at Morgan in Clinton and several multi-team meets. It’s the second time in the last five years that snow has cancelled the New Milford Invitational. It was also cancelled in 2012.

Extra points earned help Pomperaug to one-point win over Masuk
Pomperaug’s Will Foschi major decision victory at 195 pounds in the final match of the evening was enough to lift the Panthers to a 37-36 win over Masuk (13-10). Teammate Tim Cocchiola (152) also picked up a key major decision win and an extra point for Pomperaug, now 6-6. ….Xavier had six pins in a 43-29 decision over Guilford in SCC Div. A action. … Berlin won seven of eight bouts on the mat but giving up 36 points (6 forfeits) allowed Maloney to earn a 42-36 victory. … Northwestern had four pins and won all five contested matches in a 39-24 victory over Seymour to earn their second win of the season. … No. 7 New Fairfield (6-0) had eight pins in a 69-6 win over Weston … No. 3 Fairfield Warde (7-0) had 10 pins and a tech fall in a 65-15 decision over New Canaan. … Shelton improved to 18-1 on the year with a 54-16 win over Branford. … No. 8 Bristol Eastern (4-1) prevailed in the final match of the day to earn a 42-35 decision over Simsbury. … No. 10 Foran improved to 19-3 with a tight 32-30 victory over Hand. … Newtown junior Ed Lovely earned his 100th career as the Nighthawks blanked Bunnell, 83-0. Newtown had seven pins. ... It’s been a week of milestones at Jonathan Law in Milford. The Lawman earned the 550th victory in team history Wednesday night in a 42-30 win over Amity. On Saturday, head coach Matt Schoonmaker became the all-time leader in career wins at Law when he earned his 223rd career win. He took over the team in 2005. Roy Lenz was 220-154-1 from 1987 through 2001 at Law.

College: Pioneers come close in loss
Sacred Heart (1-6) nearly erased a nine-point deficit but lost in the final bout of the match in a 22-17 loss to Brown on Sunday. … Danbury’s Kevin Jack (141) is 14-3 for No. 3 North Carolina State, which has opened the season with a 17-0 record, the best start in school history. … Trumbull’s Cross Cannone (141) of Wartburg College won six straight consolation round bouts to finish fifth at the Matman Invitational in Iowa Saturday. … The latest New England Division III rankings have been posted. …  Springfield’s Tyler Keane (133, Glastonbury), Williams’ Chris Chorzepa (184, Newington) and Roger Williams’ Kyle Foster (285, Somers) are ranked No. 1 in New England in Division III. No. 1 Danbury beats Mt. Anthony for first time since 2012
No. 1 Danbury won the first seven matches to build up a 28-point lead to beat Mt. Anthony Union from Bennington, Vt., Monday night in Danbury, 34-23. It was first win by the undefeated Hatters (7-0) over the visiting Patriots since 2012 and just the fifth since the series began in 2001. Chris Sam (120) and Peterson Souza (132) each picked up an extra point with a major decision. Danbury’s Jakob Camacho (113) opened the meet with a 5-4 win while teammate Jeremy Fields (138) got a takedown with 10 seconds left for a 4-2 victory. Danbury’s Andrew Marquis dropped a 16-13 decision at 195 but that clinched the victory for Danbury, which led by 20 with three matches remaining. … Danbury remained the No. 1 team in the state for the third straight week in the Norwich Bulletin’s state coaches poll but Ellis Tech joined the top 10 for the first time at No. 9. Ellis Tech is 15-0 and is the first technical school program to reach the top 10 since at least 1996. The state coaches poll has been going since 1983 but few technical school programs have been this good until Ellis Tech this season. New Milford, Fairfield Warde, Trumbull and New Fairfield round out the top five. Undefeated Middletown (15-0) rose four spots to No. 6. ... The HAN Network, formerly known as Hersam Acorn Newspapers, will broadcast its second FCIAC wrestling match on Wednesday, Jan. 27 when No. 1 Danbury visits No. 3 Fairfield Warde beginning at 5 p.m. You can watch live online.
