Pins lift Griswold past Ellis Tech, 40-36
Griswold erased a 24-point deficit to beat defending Class M champion Ellis Tech, 40-36. The Wolverines (2-1) won five of the last seven matches by pin to secure the victory. Johnny Falco (195) and Corey Carr (220) had the final two pins for Griswold. Ellis, who beat Ledyard for the first time on Friday, slips to 2-2 on the year. … Trumbull gave up just 16 points with victories over Bunnell, Stratford and New Haven to improve to 5-0 on the year. … Chris Fillion, Connor Massey, Alex Barbour and Ron Quagliani each had pins as Notre Dame-West Haven (2-1) earned their first-ever SCC victory with a 54-24 win over Fairfield Prep. …. The 31st annual Frank Chaves Invitational in Simsbury and the Enfield Duals were postponed until Wednesday, Dec. 27.

With three wins, Warde improve to 4-1
Fairfield Warde improved to 4-1 on the year with victories over Shelton, 51-21; Greenwich, 52-24; and Port Chester, N.Y., 63-12 in a four-team dual in Fairfield. … Pins from Garrett Zipperstein (106) and Steven Reyes (113) in the final two matches lifted Shelton (2-3) to a 42-34 win over Greenwich. Shelton’s Nathan Morrissey (220) and Ray Weiner (195) each had three wins and two pins. … Ellis Tech won four decisions including Logan Mish (195) earning an 8-5 decision to beat Ledyard, 36-33. Ellis Tech’s Collin Delsanto (285) won with a 3-2 decision while Logan Gustafson (138) prevailed, 4-2 in overtime to help the defending Class M champions. … Middletown slipped past Ledyard, 39-31 as Andrew Smikle (195) and Jacob Toth (220) finished the dual meet with a pin and a 9-3 victory, respectively for the Dragons. … Xavier had seven pins in a 42-35 win over Ledyard. … Dennis Charles (152) had three wins for Ledyard including two pins.

Danbury seizes control to top Warde
Tied at 12-12, Danbury won seven straight matches including six by pin to lift the Hatters to a 51-22 win over Fairfield Warde in a battle of two top FCIAC squads. Danbury was wrestling with outstanding All-American senior Jakob Camacho, who is healing from a knee injury. He is expected to return to the lineup in a week. … Gilbert (2-0, 1-0 BL) had six pins in a 56-24 victory over a young, rebuilding Terryville squad in the Berkshire League. Three of the six pins were in less than a minute. … Wilton (2-0) had four pins in a 44-33 victory over Stamford. … Notre Dame-Fairfield beat New Fairfield, 25-24 on criteria (greater number of near falls). … East Catholic improved to 2-0 with a 63-15 win over Windsor. The Eagles picked up four pins in the victory. … Berlin’s Josh Veleas (5-0) won his 100th career match but the Redcoats dropped a 63-13 decision to Platt High. … In a battle between the top two teams in the NCCC from a year ago, Granby erased an 18-point deficit and won seven of the final nine matches to beat Canton, 47-33. The Fleming brothers (Hunter, Logan, Cooper) each won by pin to help the Bears, who also took advantage of three Canton forfeits … Pomperaug (2-0) had five pins including a pin from Michaela Quinn at 120 in a 66-15 win over Masuk. … With five pins and five forfeits, Southington quickly dispatched Farmington, 67-9. … Dennis Charles (152) had a win by major decision to help Ledyard clinch a 43-34 victory over Fitch in ECC Division I action. Two state wrestlers helping defending champion Wartburg
Two Connecticut wrestlers have helped the defending national champion Wartburg (Iowa) College wrestling team to the No. 2 ranking in the nation. Junior Cross Cannone (149) of Trumbull and freshman Michael Ross of Foran-Milford (165) are both undefeated on the season. Cannone, who ranked No. 1 in Division III at 149 pounds, is 15-0 on the year with 10 near falls. Cannone finished second in the nation and earned All-American honors last March at 141 pounds as Wartburg won their 13th NCAA Division III national title. Ross is 12-0 at 165 pounds for Wartburg, who is 8-1 on the season. Wartburg returns to action on January 4-6 when they compete in the NWCA National Duals. … In high school action on Tuesday night, South Windsor won their first match of the season with a 45-24 victory over Conard-West Hartford. ... Trumbull High’s wrestling Alumni Day is Saturday, Dec. 23. Ceremonies begin at 9 a.m. All wrestlers should report at 8:30 a.m.

Jack, DeVivo take 6th at Beast of the East
NEWARK, Del. – Danbury’s Ryan Jack (120) and Xavier’s Ryan DeVivo (170) each went 5-3 at the 25th annual Beast of the East wrestling tournament at the Bob Carpenter Center on the campus of the University of Delaware Sunday to finish sixth and earn medals at the prestigious tournament. Jack lost in the quarterfinal to Michael Colaiocco of Blair Academy, 10-2. Colaiocco won for the third straight year and was named Outstanding Wrestler. Jack went 2-2 in the consolation round to take sixth. DeVivo dropped a 7-1 decision to eventual champion Julian Ramirez of Blair Academy in the quarterfinals before going 2-2 in the consolation round to finish sixth.

Danbury’s Gino Barrata (170) went 4-2 in the tournament while New Canaan’s Justin Mastrioanni (126), Tyler Sung (138) and Danbury’s A.J. Kovacs (145) each went 3-2.
