Sophomore Chris Sullivan (Canton, MA), Coast Guard, 125
Sullivan went 2-0 over the weekend to help the Bears split their home opening tri-meet. Sullivan beat Carter Merecki of Roger Williams, 1-0 and beat CJ Luth of Southern Maine, 11-0 to earn the major decision win. Luth is a returning NCAA Division III Northeast Region placewinner and beat nationally ranked Ty Herzog in his first match of the night. Sullivan had a big win over Luth and placed fifth at the prestigious York invitational last weekend. Sullivan is now ranked No. 8 nationally.

NEWA Rookie Wrestler of Week
Freshman Grayson DeLuca (Canterbury, CT), WPI, 157
DeLuca went 3-0 and had a big weekend for the Engineers. The former Woodstock Academy wrestler beat Kim of RIT, 5-2 and won by major decision over Tom Marrone of Oneonta, 14-2. DeLuca also had a huge 5-4 win over Adrian Berry of Cortland. Berry was a Northeast Region finalist and national qualifier last year. College roundup
Malone has nine wins in first 10 matches for NU
Senior Dominick Malone (Granby) pinned Dakota Leach of Southern Illinois-Edwardsville Sunday in 2:58 but it wasn’t as SIU-Edwardsville beat Northwestern, 28-18 on Sunday. The Wildcats slip to 1-4 in dual meets. Malone is off to a good start at 133 pounds with a 9-1 record, six pins and seven wins by bonus points (more than 7). Northwestern hosts No. 8 Ohio State Friday at 7 p.m. in the Big 10 opener for the Wildcats.

Kevin Jack, the Danbury sophomore at North Carolina State, won his bout at 141 pounds Sunday against Grand Canyon as the No. 5 Wolfpack throttled Grand Canyon to improve to 10-0. It’s the best start in school history. Jack beat Uzo Owuama, 4-0.

Freshman Graysen DeLuca (Canterbury) delivered three wins, including a victory over the reigning regional champion at 157, to help the nationally-ranked WPI wrestling team win two of three bouts at the Northeast Duals in Oneonta, N.Y., Saturday. The No. 30 Engineers defeated RIT, 33-10, before falling to No. 20 Cortland, 28-6, and later rebounding with a 25-12 triumph over Oneonta.

DeLuca opened the day with a 5-2 decision against RIT. He then earned a 5-4 decision to upend the defending regional champion from Cortland, 5-4. The rookie capped off the impressive afternoon with a 14-2 major decision versus Oneonta. WPI junior Brian Amato (Newington) earned a pair of decisions as well at 125 with a 9-2 win against RIT and a narrow 2-1 victory to close out the day against Oneonta. WPI is now 4-1.

Roger Williams ended the fall semester with a 7-0 record and ranked No. 5 in the nation (Division III) after beating Coast Guard, 34-9, and Southern Maine, 45-9.

In Roger Williams’ 34-9 win over Coast Guard, Nick Barbaria of RWU beat Earl Roberts 7-4 at 125 and senior Dan Roger of RWU won 8-4 over Dominick Summers of Coast Guard. At 149, James Knoeller of RWU beat Matt Viera in a high scoring affair 15-11. Then in a rematch of last year Northeast Region finals, Dan Ressler of RWU beat Mike Shermot 13-5.

In Roger Williams’ 45-9 decision over Southern Maine, the Hawks had seven pins in the win from Justin Cochran, Zach Marcoulier, Pete Hilburn, Chris Cornwell, David Welch and Kyle Foster (Somers). It was Cochran’s second pin of the day. At 157, CJ Luth (Milford) of Southern Maine had a big win in an exciting match with Ty Herzog. Luth and Herzog were tied at 13 and headed into overtime. Luth was able to secure the takedown and win the match 15-13. Coast Guard earned a win with a 33-14 win over Southern Maine, winning seven of 10 bouts. Wrestler of the week Chris Sullivan beat CJ Luth 11-0. Coast Guard got solid wins from Roberts at 125 and Painten at 285 and got pins from Palomba at 165 and Shermot at 174.

Plymouth State beat Southern Maine, 27-18, in a dual winning six of the 10 bouts. PSU got pins from Montgomery at 174 and Callahan at 165 to help seal the dual.

Rhode Island College also beat Southern Maine, 35-9. Daniel Del Gallo went 2-0 on the day for the Huskies. He beat region place winner Jon Costa 8-5. Teammate CJ Luth beat region placewinner Michael Murphy, 6-0. Jake Dorman at 141 for RIC beat Brendan Wei of USM 13-8, Drago at 174, Conrad at 184, and Georges at 285 all secured pins for the Anchormen. Rhode Island College went 2-0 on the day with the 27-18 win over Plymouth State. RIC won 6 of the 7 matches decided by decisions. Shawn Giblin had a big pin at 141 and John Georges won by Tech fall at 285 to help lead RIC in the dual win.

Williams had seven pins and won all 10 bouts in a dominating 53-0 win over Trinity College. Trinity had a full lineup and is definitely moving in the right direction, just unfortunately matched up with a very strong Williams team.

Johnson and Wales went 2-1 over the weekend. The Wildcats had two dominate wins but lost a tight 20-15 match to Cortland. Joe Ferinde at 133, Stephan Jarrell at 184, Khamri Thomas at 197 all went 3-0 for JWU. They also went 3-0 at 125 as Jay Albis went 2-0 and Bobby Jordan went 1-0.
