Foran's Ryan Luth
is named state wrestler of the year

SOUTHINGTON, March 11– Two-time New England champion Foran’s Ryan Luth of Foran in Milford was named the state’s wrestler of the year in balloting by coaches at the Connecticut High School Coaches Association (CHSCA) All-State banquet at the Aqua Turf restaurant.

For the second straight year, Danbury was recognized as the state’s team of the year.

Wrestlers that won State Open, Class LL, Class L, Class M and Class S championships were recognized with All-State honors along with seven senior wrestlers earning Academic All-State honors. State Coach of the Year and Assistant Coach of the Year honors were also presented.

Luth (52-2) went undefeated in the postseason – winning four straight tournaments and winning 15 straight matches at 152 pounds. He became the second wrestler in Southern Connecticut Conference history to win four straight SCC titles and he went onto claim his second consecutive Class M championship.

Luth won the State Open for the second year in a row and captured his second straight New England title with a triple overtime win over Devin Rivet of Bishop Hendricken, R.I., 3-2.

Danbury didn’t defend their New England championship but they finished third with just four wrestlers in the tournament – only eight points behind first-time New England champion Ponaganset, Rhode Island.

The Hatters were ranked No. 1 in Connecticut Wrestling Online’s top 10 poll, won their third straight Class LL championship and took home their fourth State Open title in the last six years.

The Academic All-State award recognizes seniors in good standing at their schools and members of the All-State team in wrestling. Candidates also need to score at least 1,800 on the SAT and/or at least 26 on the ACT.
