Four state wrestlers earn berths to NCAA Div. 3 nationals
SPRINGFIELD, Feb. 28 -- Four Connecticut wrestlers earned berths to the NCAA Division III national championships at the Northeast Regional in Springfield over the weekend. Newington’s Chris Chorzepa (184) of Williams College and Glastonbury’s Tyler Keane (133) won Northeast Regional titles and earn automatic berths to the national championship meet on March 11-12 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Somers’ Kyle Foster (285), wrestling for Roger Williams, took third while Middletown’s Devon Carillo of Wesleyan pinned Windsor Locks freshman Khamri Thomas of Johnson & Wales to take third at 195 pounds. Foster and Carillo earned NCAA invitiatons as well. The top three finishers in each weight class at the tournament earned NCAA tournament berths.
Chorzepa will be competing at the NCAA Division III tournament for the third straight year. It is the second year in a row for Foster.
Keane was Springfield's first wrestler to earn a spot in nationals after grinding out an 8-3 decision over No. 3 seed Austin Sico of Western New England in the 133 pound semifinals. Facing top-seeded Bryan Israel in the championship bout, Keane put together a gritty effort en route to a thrilling 4-3 win. Trailing 3-2 to the nation's fourth-ranked wrestler in the waning moments, Keane scored a takedown in the final three seconds of the third period to earn the regional title.
With five victories, Chorzepa won the tournament and improved to 40-0 on the year. He also became the 11th Williams wrestler to win 100 career matches with his win in the championship final over Carlos Toribio of Ithaca College, 9-2.
Despite a day-one setback for Roger Williams’ Kyle Foster (285), he still managed to take third place overall and claim an NCAA berth. Foster defeated Frank Girolamo of Norwich University 7-0, then followed it up with a 6-4 victory over Austin Shrewsbury of WPI.
At 174, two Connecticut natives battled it for third place and a NCAA tournament berth. Carillo’s third pin of the day gave him the win over Thomas. Carillo won the Gorrarian Award for most pins in the tournament.
Carrillo entered the regionals as the fifth-seed at 197. His only loss was against the No. 1 wrestler in the country, David Welch of Roger Williams University (5-1). He defeated the fourth-seed (9-2), and pinned the third-seed (Khamri Thomas of Johnson & Wales University) in 2:38. Thomas has wins this season over reigning national champ, Joe Giaramita of SUNY Cortland, who finished second in the region.
Ithaca College, ranked No. 5 in the nation, had six wrestlers qualify for the NCAA national championships to win the Northeast Regional for the second straight year. Ithaca beat Roger Williams by 7½ points. Nick Velez (165) won for the Bombers while Bryan Israel (133), Carlos Toribio (184) and Dan Glinko (285) each finished second.
Roger Williams also had six wrestlers qualify for the NCAA national tournament and its second place finish was its best regional tournament finish ever.
Danny Downes claimed the championship at the 149 pound weight class. Downes took down Zach Joseph of Springfield via a 12-6 decision to face off against Joey Gaccione of Johnson & Wales University. Downes would then edge Gaccione 2-1 to earn the win and the automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament.
At the 197 pound weight class, David Welch also claimed first place. Welch rolled to a 5-1 win over Devon Carrillo of Wesleyan College. Welch would go on to face Joe Giaramita of SUNY Cortland, the defending national champion at 197. Welch pulled off the 5-3 victory to win the championship and make his way back to the NCAA Tournament.
Longtime Ithaca head coach Marty Nichols was honored as the coach of the year, and assistant coach Seth Ecker earned assistant coach of the year honors.
Sophomore Chris Sullivan was the top Coast Guard finisher as he placed fourth and three Coast Guard wrestlers earned All-Northeast Region honors at the NCAA Division III Northeast Regional at Springfield College. Marc Wagner placed fifth at 184 pounds while Dan Fiorvanti took sixth at 174 pounds earning All-Northeast honors with a top six finish.
